遏制 (è zhì) — to contain, to check, to restrain

Definition

遏制 (èzhì) means to hold back or check something that is growing or spreading — stronger and more forceful than 控制, often used for curbing trends, crises, or negative forces (e.g. inflation, terrorism). Compare 克制, which is for restraining oneself.
