丧 (sāng) is a verb used specifically for losing a close person (family member, spouse, etc.) through death. It often appears in formal or written contexts and is commonly combined with the family role (丧母, 丧父, 丧偶, 丧子). Do not confuse it with the homograph 丧 (sàng), which means 'to lose (something)' in a general sense or 'to be discouraged'.
