Definition
临近 (lín jìn) means 'to approach (in time)' or 'to be close to (in space)'. It is more formal and literary than 接近 (jiē jìn) and 靠近 (kào jìn), which are everyday words for 'get close to'. Unlike 来临 (lái lín, arrival of an event) or 濒临 (bīn lín, on the verge of something negative), 临近 is neutral and works for both time and space.
