乌龟 (wū guī) is the common, everyday term for a tortoise or turtle. The character 龟 (guī) alone is more classical/literary and often appears in compounds (e.g., 海龟 'sea turtle'). Note that 乌龟 also carries a rude slang meaning 'cuckold' when used as an insult.
