Definition
交友 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to make friends'. The verb 交 ('to make, to establish') and the noun 友 ('friend') can split when you need to insert a measure word, a modifier, or a complement: 交了一个朋友 ('made a friend'), 交朋友 ('make friends' as a general activity). You don't put the person you befriend directly after 交友 — instead use 与/和 + person + 交友 or 交朋友.
