Definition
交朋友 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to make friends'. The verb 交 and the object 朋友 can be separated by aspect markers (了, 过), measure words, or complements: 交了很多朋友 ('made many friends'), 交到朋友 ('managed to make friends'). To specify whom you make friends with, use 跟 or 和 before the person — you cannot directly put a person after 交朋友. The separated form is common in natural speech.
