Definition
交道 is a noun meaning 'contact' or 'dealings', but in modern Chinese it is almost never used alone. It exclusively appears in the set verb phrase 打交道 (dǎ jiāodào) meaning 'to have dealings with' or 'to come into contact with someone'. You can separate the syllables with aspect or measure words, e.g. 打过一次交道. The tone on 道 is often neutral in speech.
