Definition
亭 is a bound form (b.f.) that cannot stand alone as a word. It appears in compounds with three main senses: (1) a small open building, like a pavilion or kiosk (亭子, 亭台楼阁); (2) a graceful, upright posture (亭亭玉立, used for a tall, slender woman or a flower); (3) the meaning of 'exactly' or 'precisely in the middle' (亭午 'noon', 亭匀 'well-proportioned'). The second and third senses are more literary and less frequent in everyday speech.
