Definition
今 is a bound form (b.f.) — it cannot stand alone as an independent word in modern Chinese. You'll only see it as the first element in fixed compounds like 今天 (jīntiān, today), 今年 (jīnnián, this year), 今后 (jīnhòu, from now on), 当今 (dāngjīn, nowadays), and 古今 (gǔjīn, ancient and modern). It carries the core meaning of 'the present time' or 'now', but always needs another morpheme to form a complete word.
