Definition
代名词 has two main uses. In linguistics, it can mean 'pronoun' (though 代词 is far more common in everyday Chinese). More frequently in modern usage, it is a figurative noun meaning 'a synonym' or 'a byword' — something that is so closely associated with a concept that it becomes representative of it, e.g. 成为…的代名词 ('become synonymous with…').
