Definition
代替 (dài tì) is the general-purpose verb for 'to replace' – one person or thing takes the place of another. It is more common and neutral than 替 (tì), which is more colloquial and also functions as a preposition ('on behalf of'). Unlike 更换 (gēng huàn), which is used for replacing broken or worn-out items, 代替 can be used in a wider range of contexts.
