Definition
住手 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to stop (what one is doing)'. It is often used as a command: 住手! ('Stop!'). When adding aspect markers or measure words, the verb 住 and the object 手 can separate: 住了手 ('stopped'), 住过一次手 ('stopped once').
