Definition
傲 (ào) has two contrasting senses: the negative "arrogant, haughty" and the positive "unyielding, defiant with pride" (e.g., 傲骨). Unlike 自豪 (zìháo), which is purely positive pride in achievements, 傲's positive sense implies standing firm with dignity. It differs from 傲慢 and 高傲, which are always negative, and from 强硬, which focuses on toughness rather than pride.
