儿童 (ér tóng) is a formal word for 'child', often used in official, medical, or educational contexts (e.g. 儿童节, 儿童医院). In everyday speech, Chinese speakers use 孩子, 小朋友, or 小孩儿 instead. It does not specify gender, unlike 儿子 'son'.
