Definition
八卦 (bā guà) has two very different meanings: the eight trigrams of the I Ching (a Taoist divination system), and gossip / gossipy talk about people's private lives. For the 'gossip' meaning, 闲话 (xián huà) is a broader term for idle talk that is less focused on scandal, while 扯 (chě) means to chat aimlessly—八卦 is specifically scandal-focused and is also common as an adjective (e.g., 她特别八卦).
