Definition
凝 is a verb with two main threads: physical solidification (liquids turning solid, e.g. 凝固 'to freeze/solidify') and mental/abstract convergence (focusing one's mind or gathering forces, e.g. 凝聚 'to gather together'). It's a higher-register verb often seen in written or formal Chinese. When used alone, it typically needs a complement or a disyllabic partner — 凝神 'to concentrate one's mind', 凝望 'to stare fixedly', 凝思 'to ponder deeply'.
