Definition
分支 (fēn zhī) is a general noun for 'branch' — it covers companies, rivers, academic fields, etc. It is broader than 部门 (bù mén), which is limited to organizational departments, and 岔 (chà), which refers to a physical fork (road/river). The sibling 专科 (zhuān kē) is a narrower term for a branch of study or medical specialty.
