Definition
初等 (chū děng) is a formal adjective for 'elementary' when describing the earliest stage of education or a level, e.g., 初等教育 (elementary education). It is more narrow than 基本 (jī běn 'basic, fundamental'), which covers general essentials, and more specific to school levels than 初级 (chū jí 'primary/junior'), which is a broader progression marker (初级, 中级, 高级).
