Definition
刨 (páo) has two common meanings. For 'dig', it's a colloquial word often used for digging up root vegetables or small holes (e.g., 刨土豆), while 挖 (wā) is the general verb for any digging, and 挖掘 (wājué) is more formal. For 'deduct/exclude' (colloquial), 刨 outpaces 扣 (kòu)/扣除 (kòuchú) in everyday speech about time or counts, whereas the others are standard for money deductions. 排除 (páichú) means 'eliminate/rule out', not simply deduct.
