Definition
刻字 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to carve characters' — typically on seals, stone tablets, or other hard surfaces. The verb 刻 and the object 字 can split apart when you add aspect markers, measure words, or modifiers between them, as in 刻了一个字 ('carved one character') or 刻过字 ('have carved characters'). You can also specify the surface with a 在 phrase: 在石头上刻字.
