Definition
占领 (zhàn lǐng) means 'to occupy, capture' and emphasizes taking control of a place, market, or position, often by military force or strategic effort. It is more deliberate than 占 (zhàn, 'take up'), more concrete than 占据 (zhàn jù, 'hold a position'), and neutral compared to 霸占 (bà zhàn, 'forcibly monopolize') or 侵占 (qīn zhàn, 'invade and occupy'). Unlike 夺取 (duó qǔ, 'seize by force'), 占领 implies sustained control.
