Definition
取名 is a separable verb (离合词) formed by the verb 取 ('to take/choose') and the noun 名 ('name'). It primarily means 'to give a name to someone or something' — you commonly use the pattern 给 + person/thing + 取名. The verb and noun can split when inserting measure words, numbers, or complements, e.g. 取了一个名字 ('gave a name'). In religious contexts, it can mean 'to christen' (baptism). The less common sense 'to seek fame' (often in negative contexts like 沽名钓誉) also exists. Because it's a separable verb, the object of naming is placed before the verb phrase with 给, never directly after 取名.
