Definition
叫板 (jiào bǎn) has two meanings: in Peking opera, it's a performer's signal to the musicians; in colloquial speech, it means "to challenge" with a defiant, provocative tone. Compared to the neutral 挑战 (tiǎo zhàn), 叫板 is more confrontational and carries a sense of open defiance.
