Definition
号称 has two senses: a neutral 'to be known as' (like 称为) and a more critical 'to claim (often exaggeratedly)'. Unlike neutral 称为/称作, the second sense implies the claim may be false or overstated; 自称 means 'to call oneself' and is more about self-proclamation.
