喧闹 (xuān nào) describes a loud, chaotic noise, often from a crowd or lively scene — stronger and more literary than 吵 (chǎo 'noisy, quarrelsome'). It overlaps with 嘈杂 (cáo zá 'clamorous') but 喧闹 can also be a verb ('to make a racket'), while 嘈杂 is only an adjective. 喧哗 (xuān huá) is similar but more formal, often used in prohibitions like 'no shouting'.
