Definition
在野 is a verb-object compound meaning 'to be in opposition' (political). It contrasts with 在朝 'in power'. Originally from classical Chinese where 野 meant 'countryside' (as opposed to court), today it is used almost exclusively in political contexts to describe parties or individuals not currently holding office. As a verb-object compound, it can take time phrases (在野多年) but is not commonly split with measure words.
