Definition
外在 (wài zài) means 'external, extrinsic' — it describes qualities or factors that are not inherent to something, often used in abstract contexts (e.g., external appearance, environment). Contrast with 外来 (wài lái), which means 'external' in the sense of coming from outside (e.g., foreign, imported). 内在 (nèi zài) is the opposite: 'inner, intrinsic'.
