Definition
失守 is a verb-object compound (离合词) meaning 'to fall to the enemy' (of a city, position) or 'to fail in one's duty' (of a person). As a separable verb, the two syllables can be split when adding aspect markers (了, 过) or expressions of frequency: 失了守 ('lost'), 失过一次守 ('failed once'). The military sense is the most common in news reporting.
