Definition
失聪 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to lose one's hearing'. The verb part 失 ('to lose') and the object part 聪 ('hearing') can be split, allowing time words or aspects to slot between them — for example, 失了聪 ('lost hearing') and 失过一次聪 ('lost hearing once'). In everyday use, however, the whole word is often kept together.
