失败 (shībài) describes failing, losing, or being defeated—the subject is the one who suffers the loss. This is opposite in direction to 打败/击败 (to defeat), where the subject causes the loss. 失败 is also an adjective (e.g., 失败的经验 'a failed experience'), unlike its verb-only siblings.
