Definition
嫉妒 (jí dù) means 'to be jealous of, to envy' and carries a negative connotation of resentment or ill will toward someone else's success or possessions. This contrasts with 羡慕 (xiàn mù, HSK4), which is a positive, admiring envy without malice. 忌妒 (jì du) is a near-synonym, but 嫉妒 is the more common form.
