Definition
字儿 is the erhua (儿化) form of 字 (zì), common in Northern Mandarin, especially the Beijing dialect. The 儿 suffix adds a colloquial, casual tone. It can mean (1) a Chinese character or written word, like '字', and (2) a written note, receipt, or IOU in informal contexts (e.g., 写个字儿, 收个字儿). Use this form in informal speech; in formal writing the standard form without 儿 is preferred.
