学年 (xuénián) refers specifically to the academic year, the school calendar from start to end. It differs from 年级 (niánjí), which means 'grade level' (e.g., first grade), and from 年度 (niándù), a broader term for any cyclic year (fiscal, calendar). A 学年 is divided into 学期 (xuéqī, semesters).
