家园 (jiā yuán) refers to one's homeland or native place with a strong emotional, almost poetic attachment — it is broader and more formal than 家乡 (jiāxiāng, everyday hometown) or 故乡 (gùxiāng, nostalgic birthplace). It can also extend to the whole planet (地球家园). Unlike 本土 (běntǔ, which emphasizes domestic vs. foreign), 家园 carries a sense of belonging and warmth.
