寂寞 (jì mò) describes a person's emotional loneliness (a longing for company) or a place's quiet, desolate stillness. Its closest synonym for people is 孤独 (gū dú), but 孤独 often states a solitary fact rather than a feeling; for places, 寂静 (jì jìng) means pure silence without the desolate sense.
