Definition
尴尬 (gāngà) describes a situation or person as awkward, embarrassing, or socially uncomfortable — it's the go-to word for an awkward silence or an embarrassing moment. It's more common and neutral than 难堪 (nánkān, stronger, often 'humiliating') and 为难 (wéinán, which emphasizes being put in a difficult spot). Unlike 害羞 (hàixiū, shyness) or 别扭 (bièniu, uncomfortable/at odds), 尴尬 focuses on the social tension itself.
