Definition
己 is a bound form (b.f.) — it never stands alone in modern Chinese but appears in compounds. Its most common meaning is 'self, oneself', as in 自己 (zìjǐ, 'self'), 己见 (jǐjiàn, 'one's own opinion'), and 知己 (zhījǐ, 'intimate friend'). It is also the 6th of the 10 Heavenly Stems, used in the traditional Chinese calendar and astrology for naming years, months, and days (e.g. 己巳年, the year of the Snake).
