巴结 (bā jie) means 'to fawn on' or 'toady to' someone, especially a person of higher status, with a strong negative tone of obsequiousness. 讨好 (tǎo hǎo) also means to curry favor but is broader—it can apply to trying to please anyone and appears in the idiom 费力不讨好 ('a thankless task').
