Definition
忧郁 (yōuyù) describes a deep, lingering sadness or melancholy, often with a poetic or romantic quality — it's the word for a person's temperament or an artwork's mood. It differs from 沮丧 (jǔsàng), which is a temporary, reactive dejection after a setback, and from 郁闷 (yùmèn), which is a frustrated, stifled gloom from being stuck in an unpleasant situation.
