Definition
患病 is a formal/literary way of saying 'to fall ill' or 'to contract a disease'. As a separable verb (离合词), the verb 患 and the object 病 can be split: a measure word, modifier, or duration can go between them (e.g., 患了一场大病 'suffered a serious illness'). The object can also be expanded (患了重病 'contracted a severe disease'). It is more common in written Chinese or news reports than in everyday speech.
