患者 (huàn zhě) is the formal, clinical term for 'patient' — used in medical records, doctor–patient communication, and official contexts. 病人 (bìng rén) is the everyday word for a sick person. Use 患者 when referring to someone receiving medical treatment; use 病人 for a general ill person.
