戒烟 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to quit smoking'. The verb 戒 ('to quit') and the object 烟 ('cigarettes/smoking') can be split when adding aspect markers, duration, or object complements — for example, 戒了烟 ('quit smoking', perfective), 戒过烟 ('have tried quitting'), or 戒了好几次烟 ('quit several times'). In everyday use you'll also hear it unsplit: 他戒烟了.
