打头阵 is a verbal phrase (离合词) originally meaning 'to fight in the vanguard of a battle; to be the first to charge.' Figuratively, it means to take the lead or be the first to tackle a risky or difficult task. As a separable verb (离合词), you can insert elements like 了, 过, 一次, or a time duration between 打 and 头阵: e.g. 打了头阵, 打过一次头阵. You do not place an object after the whole phrase — instead, use 为 or 给 to introduce the people or cause you're taking the lead for.
