Definition
打折扣 is a separable verb (离合词) with two main uses: literally 'to give a discount' (e.g. 打八折 '20% off'), and figuratively 'to fall short of a standard or promise' (e.g. 质量打了折扣 'the quality was compromised'). When separated, the object or measure word goes between 打 and 折扣, as in 打了八折 or 打过一次折扣. The figurative sense often appears in the pattern 打折扣 (without insertion) or 打了折扣 (with 了).
