承诺 (chéng nuò) means 'to promise' — a formal, serious commitment, often used in official or personal contexts. It is stronger than 答应 (dā ying, casual 'agree/promise') but less forceful than 保证 (bǎo zhèng, 'guarantee/ensure'). Unlike 约定 (yuē dìng, mutual agreement after discussion), 承诺 is a unilateral promise.
