Definition
抄袭 (chāo xí) means 'to plagiarize' – copying someone else's work and presenting it as one's own, with a strong negative connotation in academic/creative contexts. Unlike neutral 复制 (fù zhì 'to duplicate') or 模仿 (mó fǎng 'to imitate'), 抄袭 implies dishonesty; 抄 (chāo) can also mean 'to plagiarize' but is less formal. A separate military sense means 'to attack the flank or rear of an enemy'.
