抑郁 (yìyù) refers to a sustained, often clinical state of depression — it is the word used in 抑郁症 (depressive disorder). It is stronger and more lasting than temporary moods like 郁闷 (frustration from being stuck) and 低落/消沉 (downcast spirits). 忧郁 has a more literary, melancholic tone; 烦闷 is irritation mixed with gloom.
