Definition
报信 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to notify' or 'to inform (of news)'. It is made of 报 (report) and 信 (message). When you need to insert a measure word, duration, or object, you split the two syllables: 报个信 (send a message), 报过一次信 (sent a message once). The person being notified is introduced with 给 or 向: 给他报信 (notify him).
