押金 (yā jīn) is a refundable security deposit paid when renting or leasing (an apartment, car, etc.), returned when the contract ends. Unlike 定金 (dìng jīn), a non-refundable down payment that seals a deal, 押金 covers potential damages and is refundable. It is distinct from depositing money in a bank (存 cún, 存款 cún kuǎn).
