Definition
拨号 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to dial a number'. The verb 拨 and the noun 号 can split when you add aspect particles (了, 过), measure words, or durations between them — for example, 拨了三次号 ('dialed three times'), 拨过这个号 ('have dialed this number'). You don't need an object after 拨号 because 号 itself is the object; if you want to specify a number, use 拨 + number + 号 (拨123号).
